"I need you to be mine," Punn whispered urgently, catching Noh by the wrist in the empty corridor after school. "Not for real. Just... pretend."
Noh pulled back, incredulous. "You want me to act like I'm your boyfriend? Are you out of your mind?"
But Punn was desperate. His patriarch had issued an ultimatum: court the daughter of an old family ally, or face the consequences. The only person who could sway that stubborn parental mind was Pang, his younger sibling, who devoured romance novels featuring boys who loved boys with an enthusiasm that bordered on fanaticism. If Pang believed her brother already had a sweetheart — a male sweetheart — she would champion his cause without hesitation.
"I can help you," Punn added, reading Noh's hesitation. "Your ensemble needs funding. I can make that happen."
Noh's musical group was on the brink of collapse. Without financial backing, everything they'd built would evaporate. He swallowed his pride and shook on the arrangement.
Thus began the charade: stolen glances in hallways that weren't entirely stolen, hands held for show that lingered a beat too long, hushed conversations in corners that started as performance and ended as confession.
"Do you think they're buying it?" Noh asked one afternoon, sitting shoulder to shoulder on the bleachers, the setting sun painting everything gold.
"I think... I'm starting to forget it's supposed to be fake," Punn admitted quietly.
Noh turned to face him, and the truth hung between them like a held breath. Somewhere between the fabricated dates and the rehearsed affection, between the shared secrets and the laughter that needed no script, the boundary had blurred beyond recognition. What was meant to be a transaction had become something terrifyingly, exhilaratingly genuine.
"I don't want to pretend anymore," Noh said, his voice barely audible.
Punn reached for his hand — not for the audience this time, not for his sister's benefit, not for any deal. Just because the thought of letting go was unbearable.
Two teenagers stood at the edge of discovery, hearts pounding in unison, realizing that the most authentic thing they'd ever done was the lie they told the world about each other.
