"Tell me this isn't madness," she breathed, her back against the practice room mirror, his breath warm against her collarbone. "Tell me this makes sense."
"It doesn't," he replied, and kissed her anyway.
She was a woman of science — a chemistry instructor at an elite academy, trained to observe reactions, predict outcomes, document results. Her existence was methodical, controlled, respectable on the surface. Beneath it, she had been conducting an affair with a wedded colleague for years, a slow erosion of her own dignity disguised as passion. She knew the formula. The age gap between them was more than numbers — it was experience versus potential, caution versus hunger, the weight of compromises already made versus the terror of dreams not yet abandoned. She saw in him the passion she'd been starving for; he saw in her the depth he'd been skipping across the surface of.
"I don't know if this is love or combustion," she whispered into his shoulder one rain-soaked night.
"Does it have to be one or the other?" he murmured back.
Two souls at the crossroads of what they should want and what they actually crave — burning through every reasonable objection to find, perhaps, a second chance at something worth reaching for.
